What to write in a Father's Day card

Lots of dads would be happy with a handshake and a "thanks, Dad." But the card is your one chance a year to say a bit more, and most of us freeze and write "Happy Father's Day!" again.

Pick a line below that sounds like something you'd say, then add one thing only your dad would recognize: the song he always played in the car, the job he did every Saturday, the advice he gave you once and never repeated.

Heartfelt messages

  1. Everything I know about showing up for people, I learned from watching you. Happy Father's Day.
  2. You never made a big deal of it, but you were always there. I noticed. Thank you.
  3. The older I get, the more I hear your voice in my own advice. Happy Father's Day, Dad.
  4. Thank you for the early mornings, the long drives and the patience I didn't deserve.
  5. You taught me how to fix things, and how to know when something can't be fixed. Both have mattered.
  6. I hope I'm half the parent you were. Happy Father's Day.
  7. Thank you for believing in me, especially the times I gave you no reason to.
  8. For every game you watched from the sidelines and every ride home after: thank you, Dad.

Funny messages

  1. Happy Father's Day to the man who taught me everything I know. Except the stuff I learned on YouTube.
  2. Thanks for passing on your sense of humour. Everyone else is still waiting for an apology.
  3. Dad, you're the reason I check that the stove is off three times. Happy Father's Day.
  4. Happy Father's Day! I'd have got you something better, but you'd only tell me how much I overpaid.

  7. Happy Father's Day to the man who still thinks the thermostat is his alone.
  8. I'd tell you a dad joke, but I know you've already heard it. You told it to me.

Short and sweet

  1. Happy Father's Day to the best dad I know.
  2. Thanks for everything, Dad. Love you.
  3. Proud to be your kid. Happy Father's Day.
  4. You're my hero. Still.

From the grandkids

  1. Happy Father's Day, Grandpa! You tell the best stories and give the best piggyback rides.

  3. You're the only grown-up who lets me win at cards. Happy Father's Day, Grandpa.
  4. I love it when you let me help in the garage. Happy Father's Day!
  5. Grandpa, you're the coolest. Mom says I'm not allowed to tell you, so don't tell her.

For a stepdad or father figure

Keep it simple and sincere, and thank him for choosing to be there.

  1. You didn't have to be there for me, and you were anyway. Happy Father's Day.
  2. Family isn't only who you're born to. Thank you for being mine.
  3. Thank you for stepping in, stepping up and never stepping back.
  4. You've been more of a dad to me than you'll ever know. Happy Father's Day.
  5. Thank you for every bit of advice, every ride and every time you were just there. It meant a lot.

For a dad who isn't big on words

Some dads get uncomfortable with anything mushy. One plain, specific line goes down best.

  1. Thanks for teaching me to drive. And for not yelling. Much.
  2. I still use the toolbox you gave me. Happy Father's Day.
  3. Good dad. Good guy. Happy Father's Day.
  4. Thanks for always picking up when I call. Happy Father's Day.

How to make it sound like you

Or say it out loud, all of you

If your dad is hard to buy for, a card from every one of his kids, with a real story in each, is the gift that's hard to top. Saying it out loud is often easier than writing it.

That's what Story Den's Father's Day board does. You send one link to the family. Each person spends two minutes telling a memory of him, Athena, the interviewer, asks a follow-up or two, and each memory becomes an illustrated card with a voice message. Father's Day in the US and Canada is Sunday, June 20, 2027. It's $19 for up to 8 people, and nobody needs an app.
