15 sentimental Mother's Day gift ideas

Ask most moms what they want for Mother's Day and the answer is "nothing" or "just spend time with me." That's not much help when you're standing in front of the flower section, but it does narrow things down.

These are the gifts that mean something: keepsakes, things the family makes together, and time with her. Mother's Day in the US and Canada is Sunday, May 9, 2027. Prices are rough guides, and several of these cost nothing.

Keepsakes (the ones she'll keep in a drawer forever)

  1. A Story Den board from all her kids $19 or $29

Each of you tells a memory of her out loud in two minutes, and each memory becomes an illustrated card with your voice message. It's one gift from the whole family, even if you live in different cities, and she can play everyone's voices again whenever she likes. Start a Mother's Day board.

  2. Her own handwriting, framed or engraved $40 to $100

Find an old birthday card or a recipe in her writing and have it framed, or engraved on a bracelet or a cutting board. Her own mother's handwriting works too, if you can find some.

  3. Birthstone jewellery for each of her kids $50 to $150

A necklace or ring with one stone per child (and grandchild, if there's room). Classic, and she'll actually wear it.

  4. A digital photo frame the family fills $80 to $150

Many frames let everyone send photos to it from their phones. Set it up, load a few hundred family pictures, and keep adding new ones after Mother's Day.

  5. A framed family tree $40 to $100

Her parents and grandparents at the top, her kids and grandkids below. Fill in the names together, then have it printed and framed.

Made by the family

  1. A book of her recipes $30 to $60

Collect the dishes she always makes, ask her for the ones that only exist in her head, and get it printed. Add a line from each of you about the meal you remember.

  2. A letter from each of her kids free

Each of you writes one letter, and you give them to her together in an envelope or a small binder. It costs nothing and it's the gift she'll reread the most.

  3. A recreated old family photo free

Pick a photo from when you were kids and stage it again, same poses, same spot if you can. Frame the two side by side.

  4. A photo book of one year $30 to $80

Everyone sends their photos of her from the past year. It shows her the moments she was too busy to notice.

  5. A coupon book of real help free

Not "one free hug". Things she'd actually use: a Saturday of yard work, a drive to the airport, a weekend visit, dinner cooked and cleaned up.

Time with her

  1. Breakfast made by the kids $10 to $20

Little ones can help, older ones can do the whole thing, and nobody leaves her the dishes.

  2. A class you take together $50 to $120 each

Pottery, cooking, painting, dancing: something she's mentioned wanting to try. You'll both remember the afternoon longer than whatever you make.

  3. A day she plans and you pay for $50 and up

She picks everything: where you go, where you eat, what you do. Your only job is to show up and not check your phone.

  4. Planting something together $30 to $60

A rose bush, a fruit tree or a bed of her favourite flowers. It comes back every spring, around Mother's Day.

  5. A standing call free

If you live far away, put a weekly call in both your calendars and keep it. Write it in her card so it counts as a promise.

The short version

Moms say they want time and attention, and the gifts above all give her one or the other. If her kids are spread out and you want one gift from all of you, a Story Den board takes a minute to set up, and everyone adds their memory from wherever they are.
