What to write in a retirement card for a coworker

The card is going round. It lands on your desk, and the witty, articulate professional you are disappears. All that's left is "Congrats!!" in slightly too big handwriting.

Pick a lane (heartfelt, funny or short), take one of the lines below, and add one specific detail: a project you did together, a habit of theirs, something they always said. A specific line beats a poetic one.

Heartfelt messages

  1. Working beside you made the hard days easier and the good days better. Thank you for everything.
  2. You set the standard for this team. The office won't feel the same without you.
  3. Thank you for the mentoring, the patience and the laughs. Enjoy every minute of this.
  4. Your kindness held this team together. Wishing you a retirement as generous as you are.
  5. I've learned more from watching you work than from any training course. Congratulations.
  6. You made coming to work something to look forward to. That's rare.
  7. Wishing you slow mornings, long trips and no more Monday alarms.
  8. Thank you for showing us how to do great work and stay a good person.
  9. Your work here will outlast your desk. Happy retirement.
  10. It's been an honour. Now go enjoy the life you've earned.

Funny messages

  1. Congratulations on your promotion to full-time napper.
  2. Retirement: every day is Saturday, and you still won't know what day it is.
  3. You've officially escaped the meetings that could have been emails.
  4. Now you can tell your stories to people who haven't heard them 400 times.
  5. Happy retirement! Please don't gloat about the sleeping in.
  6. The good news: no more alarm clock. The bad news: you'll miss us. Probably.
  7. You're the only person I know who's excited about Mondays now.
  8. Retirement rule #1: every day is the weekend. Rule #2: don't remind us.

For a close work friend

  1. From coffee runs to deadline panics, I wouldn't have survived without you.
  2. Work won't be the same, but I'm keeping the friend. Lunch soon?
  3. You were the best part of this job. Don't be a stranger.
  4. Remember the quarter we thought we'd never get through? We did. Enjoy this.

  6. To my favourite coworker and better friend: happy retirement.
  7. We survived a decade of Mondays together. You deserve every second of this.
  8. Now who's going to laugh at my jokes? Enjoy retirement!

Or skip the writing

Writing something good on the spot is hard, which is why cards fill up with "Congrats!!" Talking is easy. Ask someone for one memory, give them two minutes, and you get the story they'd never have typed.

That's the idea behind Story Den's online group retirement card. Instead of passing a card round, you send one link to the team. Everyone tells a two-minute memory out loud, and Athena, the interviewer, asks the follow-ups that bring the story out. Each memory becomes an illustrated card with the person's voice message. It's $19 for up to 8 people, and nobody needs an app.
